UN classifies 17 areas in Sudan at risk of famine

Khartoum, Aug 15 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations has recognized 17 Sudanese regions at risk of famine, local sources reported, citing officials from the highest international body.

One of the areas most at risk is the besieged city of El Fasher, which has a total lack of humanitarian assistance, while others like Darfur, the Nuba Mountains, Khartoum, and Jazira are also included.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that the World Food Program is calling for urgent humanitarian access to El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur and the last stronghold of the army in that region of Sudan.

The European Union admitted in a statement released the day before that hundreds of thousands of civilians remain trapped in and around the city of El Fasher, currently besieged by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and all trade routes and supply lines have been cut off.

Official data from international agencies point out that humanitarian organizations have been unable to deliver lifesaving aid for more than a year.

Meanwhile, health officials in Sudan are conducting an urgent cholera vaccination campaign here in Khartoum, amid a rapidly spreading outbreak.

According to the director of the Doctors Without Borders mission in Sudan, Tuna Turkmen, the current situation is beyond urgent, as recent heavy rains have contributed to water contamination.
