Angola to vaccinate nearly seven million children against polio

Luanda, Aug 15 (Prensa Latina) Angola began the second phase of its polio vaccination campaign, which aims to reach nearly seven million children across the country.

The first phase took place at the end of July in the province of Benguela, which, along with Huambo, Cubango, and Cuanza Norte, reported 19 cases of the disease, confirmed by the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

The vaccination campaign, led by the Ministry of Health with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO), seeks to curb the spread of poliovirus type 2 and protect all children under five. Therefore, in addition to this second phase, which concludes on August 17, there will be a third phase in September.

The work teams are moving from house to house in the communities and in high-traffic areas, such as markets, churches, and public transportation terminals. In addition, WHO is issuing messages through the media urging parents to bring their children to receive the two-dose nOPV2 vaccine.

Special teams were also deployed to remote or security-challenged areas to ensure the campaign’s reach.

The WHO is participating in harmonizing plans, strengthening capacities, and mobilizing resources for the campaign’s success; it is also contributing to case-finding for acute flaccid paralysis, cholera, measles, and other notifiable diseases.
