Death of senator and presidential candidate shook Colombia’s week

Bogota, Augt 16 (Prensa Latina) The death of senator and presidential candidate for the Centro Democratico Party Miguel Uribe (1986-2025), two months after he was the victim of an attack, rocked the scene in Colombia in the week ending today.

The 39-year-old politician was shot in the head and leg last June 7 in Fontibón, west of this capital, while giving a campaign speech and, despite numerous surgeries, his neurological prognosis has remained reserved ever since.

After his death, a burning chapel was installed in the Congress of the Republic where first the legislators, and then the citizens, came to say good bye to him.

Subsequently, a Eucharist was offered in the Primate Cathedral of Bogotá and later the remains of the politician were led by the presidential guard and buried in the Central Cemetery of this capital.

Uribe was the grandson of former president Julio César Turbay (1916-2005), who ruled from 1978 to 1982, and the son of Diana Turbay, a journalist who in 1990 was kidnapped by “Los Extraditables”, a group of drug traffickers of the Medellín Cartel led by Pablo Escobar, and killed five months later in a rescue attempt.

So far, six individuals have been charged with his murder, including the minor accused of shooting him.

According to the president, Gustavo Petro, it was an act of national shock.

“It is a subject in which the competent authorities of both the Government and the Prosecutor’s Office have put all their support, including asking international experts to help in the investigation to determine the real causes, the truth of the crime,” he said.
