Jordan condemns Israeli attacks against Christians in Jerusalem

Amman, Aug 17 (Prensa Latina) The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly decried Israel's continued attacks against the Christian community in occupied Jerusalem.

In an official statement, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Sufian Qudah particularly denounced the freezing of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate’s bank accounts, a measure he described as a flagrant violation of the historical and legal status quo regarding the holy sites.

He reaffirmed the Kingdom’s rejection of what he described as illegal actions by Tel Aviv, recalling that Israel lacks sovereignty over the West Bank and over the Arab, Islamic, and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

The official urged the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibility, pressing for an immediate halt to the Israeli aggression against Gaza Strip and the unilateral measures that persist in the occupied West Bank.

He also called for concrete actions to halt violations against Jerusalem’s holy sites and defend the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to establish an independent state in their national land.

Amman’s condemnation follows a series of Israeli statements that have sparked outrage among Christian churches and communities, including attempts to restrict religious activities and limit access to iconic sites such as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

These measures, considered discriminatory and provocative, have been rejected by church leaders, Arab governments, and international organizations, as they represent an attempt to alter the historic and plural character of Jerusalem.
