Civil peace initiative launched in southern Syrian province

Damascus, Aug 19 (Prensa Latina) The Civil Initiative Committee to promote reconciliation in the southern Syrian province of Sweida held a press conference today at which it reported on the progress and objectives of this popular project.

The head of the committee, Mutee al-Batin, stressed the civilian nature of the initiative and its efforts to restore the social and national fabric.

He emphasized that the proposal seeks to consolidate the discourse of unity, reject sectarian incitement and encourage dialogue and coexistence.

Al-Batin explained that the initiative seeks to give Syrians hope of preserving their common identity beyond divisions, recalling that the people of Sweida feel part of the same family despite difficult circumstances.

The initiative emerged from the work of the General Council for Reconciliation, an entity that brings together some 5,000 activists from different communities and regions, dedicated to civil peace and social reform, he said.

He reiterated that the Syrians cannot live without a complete and united Syria.

The project’s initiators reported that it has received support from different communities, including prominent figures from the Druze community in Damascus

However, the initiative faces challenges including pressure against community leaders, divisive propaganda and continuing incidents of kidnapping and violence that aggravate the situation.

Al-Batin said that, although it is not an official initiative of the State, there is receptivity and support from the authorities, since “no peace agreement can succeed without the support of the government, guarantor of national unity”.

The initiative’s action plan focuses on maintaining communication with all local and national actors, promoting unity among religious and social leaders, and working in coordination with reconciliation committees in other governorates such as Quneitra y Qatana.
