DRC urges UN Security Council to sanction Rwanda

Kinshasa, Aug 23 (Prensa Latina) Zenon Mukongo, Permanent Representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to the United Nations, urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to strengthen sanctions on Rwanda, local press reported on Saturday.

During an emergency session requested by the United States regarding the increased attacks in eastern Congo, Mukongo stressed that the measures should be extended to the commanders of the Congo River Alliance-the March 23 Movement (AFC/M23).

The diplomat indicated that the Kinshasa Government has doubts about Kigali’s sincerity, despite the peace agreement signed between the two nations on June 27 in Washington, with US mediation.

He added that the AFC/M23’s Rwandan allies also show no respect for the Declaration of Principles signed in Qatar, where negotiations for a final peace treaty continue.

“By refusing to impose such measures on the M23 and its Rwandan supporters, the UNSC would risk tolerating impunity, undermining its 2773 resolution, and eroding its credibility and legitimacy,” the Congolese representative warned, according to Radio Okapi station.

Mukongo accused Rwanda and its allies of committing ethnic crimes, targeting civilians solely because of their origin in what he called “a deliberate attempt to violently restructure the Congolese social fabric.”
