Palestinian doctor warned of consequences of famine in Gaza

Ramallah, Aug 24 (Prensa Latina) The head of the paediatric department at Nasser Hospital, Ahmed Al-Farra, today warned that the health situation in the Gaza Strip has reached catastrophic levels and warned about the consequences of famine for children.

In an interview with Al Jazeera TV, he said that ten centres of a similar size to that of Nasser are needed to accommodate the high number of malnourished children in the coastal enclave.

Al-Farra reported an increase in the number of children who lost weight due to lack of food.

Malnutrition goes through three stages, but in Gaza they are suffering a chronic phase.

The specialist explained that there are changes impossible to correct even if they are fed again in an adequate way considering that they affect the central nervous system and some nerve cells.

If a child lacks these elements, he will have difficulties in the future with understanding, perception, expression, resistance and problem solution, he stressed.

They will also suffer short stature, thyroid hormone problems and experience a delay in sexual maturity, there is even the possibility of infertility.

Al-Farra revealed that Nasser’s malnutrition clinic, which only opens two days a week, used to receive a few cases before the war, but “today we receive more than 120 cases in a few hours”.

He described that many of them arrive at the hospital as corpses due to lack of food.

He also warned about the spread of other diseases such as meningitis, bacterial skin infections, increased polio and gastroenteritis.

In this regard, he noted that eight out of 10 suffer diarrhoea as a result of the Israeli ban on imports of vaccines against rotavirus and groundwater contamination.
