In the Buabo group, Osso Banyungu sector, in Masisi territory, AFC/M23 forces and local militias known as Wazalendo engaged in heavy clashes after the armed group attacked positions in Biholo and Muhemba with the aim of expanding its area of influence.
According to Actualité.CD, fighting continued in this area throughout Monday, with heavy and light weapons firing heard into the evening.
The AFC/M23 retreated to Kasopo on Tuesday, but various hotbeds of tension remain between the parties.
These clashes and the rebels’ advances to take control of new towns in eastern DRC violate the Declaration of Principles signed on July 19 in Doha, and also represent an obstacle to peace talks.
However, the rebels also accuse the government of violating the terms of the signed documents.
