Cuba appreciates Brazil’s donation of tuberculosis medicines

Havana, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) Pediatric patients with tuberculosis in hospitals in three Cuban provinces will benefit from the donation of combined drugs (Rifampicin and Isoniazid) made by the Brazilian government, a gesture thanked by Minsap authorities.

At a ceremony held at the Pediatric Teaching Hospital in Centro Habana, Dr. Gretza Sánchez, general director of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology of the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap), stressed that this reaffirms the historic ties of friendship between Cuba and Brazil, as well as the shared commitment to universal access to health care.

For the first time, hospitals in Havana, Santiago de Cuba and Villa Clara will have this combined formulation, which brings together two highly effective tablets and its use will shorten the duration of treatment in children going through the second phase of this communicable disease.

For his part, Mario Cruz Peñate, representing the Pan American Health Organization in the Caribbean island, reiterated the organization’s support to the countries of the region in the fight against tuberculosis, through comprehensive strategies that include accessible health coverage, technological innovation and health education.

He underscored that Cuba is currently strengthening the control of tuberculosis through a national program that guarantees the follow-up of patients.
