The spokesperson for the State Secretariat for Security, Ursina Bentele, told the Neue Zürcher Zeitung newspaper that any peacekeeping operation must have this multilateral endorsement.

Switzerland is not allowed to participate in peacekeeping or combat operations, the official stated.

She emphasized that, even with a mandate, a formal request and the approval of the Swiss government and parliament are required.
