Lula meets Panama’s President looking for MERCOSUR agreement

Brasilia, Aug 28 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will meet with his Panamanian counterpart, Jose Raul Mulino, sight a free trade agreement between his country and the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), with support from this nation that currently holds the bloc's pro tempore presidency until 2025.

Mulino’s visit also responds to an agenda agreed upon during his meeting with Lula on July 3 in Panama, where the two presidents discussed trade and investment issues.

Official sources point out that the visit also aims to boost bilateral economic relations and open spaces for Brazilian companies to invest in Panama.

Also included is promoting the port and infrastructure sector, key to Panama’s strategic position in global trade.

Discussions will include ways to strengthen tourism and leverage the connectivity of Tocumen International Airport, considered a regional hub for Central America, North America, and the Caribbean.

Regarding the visit, Mulino will meet with the US banana company Chiquita Brands to seek an agreement that will allow it to resume operations in the country.
