Turkeye closes ports and airspace to Israel

Ankara, Aug 29 (Prensa Latina) The Turkish government closed its ports and airspace to official Israeli ships and aircraft today, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced.

We do not allow Turkish ships to enter Israeli ports (…) We do not allow container ships transporting arms and ammunition to Israel to enter our ports, nor do we allow their planes to enter our airspace, the minister told Turkish lawmakers in a televised address.

A Turkish diplomatic source specified that the restriction does not affect Israeli commercial aircraft, but did not point out when these measures will be in office.

In November, the country denied permission for the Israeli presidential plane to cross its airspace, forcing it to cancel a visit to the COP29 climate conference in Azerbaijan.

In May, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also canceled a visit to Baku, reportedly because Ankara denied him access to its airspace. Turkeye is one of the countries most critical of Israel over its offensive in Gaza and accuses Tel Aviv of committing “genocide” in the Palestinian territory.

In May of last year, Ankara suspended trade relations with Israel over the war in Gaza.
