Cuban President mourns death of Academic Eduardo Torres Cuevas

Havana, Aug 31 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel expressed his sorrow for the passing of prominent Cuban academic, historian, and university professor Eduardo Torres Cuevas, at the age of 82.

“It is a sad day for Cuba, which has lost DhD. Eduardo Torres-Cuevas, a tireless and rigorous historian, a patriot of vast culture and brilliant oratory,” the president stated on his account on the social media platform X.

To him, “we owe fundamental works for the understanding of our national identity. Our condolences to his family and friends,” he added.

Also on that social media platform, Luis Morlote, an official from the ideological department of the PCC Central Committee, expressed his condolences for the loss of the “beloved historian.”

“We will never forget his teaching, his passion for history, his profound Marti and Fidelista vocation, his ethical commitment to the Homeland and the Revolution,” he concluded. Winner of the National Prize for Social Sciences (2000) and the National Prize for History (2005), the distinguished intellectual served as director of the Jose Marti Program Office and president of the Jose Marti Cultural Society.

He presided over the Cuban Academy of History and directed the Interdisciplinary Center for the Development of Social Sciences, Don Fernando Ortiz House of Advanced Studies, at the University of Havana. He was also President of the Alliance Francaise of Cuba.

A Doctor of Historical Sciences, researcher, and professor, he taught at various faculties of the University of Havana and other centers of advanced studies, and received numerous awards and recognitions.
