Brazil: Prosecutor’s Office denounces democratic disruption

Brasilia, Sep 2 (Prensa Latina) Attorney General Paulo Gonet firmly outlined the accusations against former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven of his allies for the coup attempt that occurred in Brazil on January 8, 2023.

In his remarks, the attorney general described a series of acts that, according to him, evidence a deliberate disruption of the democratic order spearheaded by the executive branch itself.

“It is evident that, on several occasions, the then president publicly requested that electronic voting machines not be used, as provided by law, under threat of annulling the elections,” he noted.

He argued that coups d’etat do not always come from actors outside power, but can be “orchestrated by their own perversion,” referring to leaders who refuse to recognize the limits of the democratic mandate.

Gonet was forceful in his warning: impunity in the face of authoritarian attempts only strengthens anti-democratic impulses. Therefore, he requested the conviction of all members of the central core of the conspiracy, including Bolsonaro.

Later, he gave the floor to presiding judge Alexandre de Moraes, who spent an hour and 27 minutes reading the report on the case.

“Sovereignty cannot, should not, and will never be vilified or extorted,” said de Moraes.

At another point in his remarks, he stated that “impunity, omission, and cowardice are not options for peace,” underscoring the Supreme Court’s commitment to the rule of law.
