Israel imprisons more than 11,000 Palestinians

Ramallah, Sept 4 (Prensa Latina) The total number of prisoners in Israeli jails has surpassed 11,000, a record number since the beginning of the current wave of violence 23 months ago, the NGO HaMoked stated.

According to data released by the Penitentiary Service, more than half are being held outside the legal process: 3,577 are under the controversial regulation known as administrative detention and 2,662 were classified as “unlawful combatants,” the Israeli group stated.

The non-governmental organization accused Israeli authorities of preventing visits to prisoners by the International Committee of the Red Cross and their families.

Access for lawyers is also limited, HaMoked stated, denouncing “the inhumane conditions, abuses, and torture” occurring in the prison facilities.

The Prisoners’ Information Office warned last month that the number of detainees is the highest since the Second Intifada, the national uprising that occurred from 2000 to 2005.

However, it clarified that this number does not include citizens captured in the Gaza Strip, a territory under Israeli fire since October 2023.

In recent months, non-governmental organizations, Palestinian authorities, and international institutions have consistently warned about the increase in repression in these centers.
