Latin America present at the Venice Film Festival

Venice, Italy, Sep 7 (Prensa Latina) In addition to Mexico's Guillermo del Toro, labeled as the Latin American presence at the recently concluded Venice Film Festival, the works of two young directors, one from Ecuador and the other from Cuba, attracted attention here.

Although this time he left without awards, del Toro appeared at the 82nd edition of La Mostra with his version of Frankenstein, an excellent film, according to the critics, closer to the Hollywood cinema of his latest works than to the original and fantastic Pan’s Labyrinth, produced between Mexico and Spain.

However, also competing from Latin America at the Festival was Hiedra, by the young Ecuadorian director Ana Cristina Barragan, winner of the Horizontes Award for Best Screenplay, a section of the event dedicated to promoting new avant-garde and cinematographic aesthetics.

Norheimsund, by Cuban Ana Alpízar, a graduate of the Audiovisual Media Arts Faculty of the University of the Arts in Havana and the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños, also premiered and competed in Horizontes, among the fourteen short films presented.

A resident of the United States, where she is studying filmmaking at New York University, Alpízar’s work at the Venice Film Festival addresses emigration, a universal theme that also affects Cuba.
