Chile: Presidential candidates to have first television debate

Santiago, Chile, Sep 10 (Prensa Latina) The eight candidates for Chile's presidency will participate in their first broadcast television debate to present the main points of their programs and interact with each other in a confrontational atmosphere.

The program, divided into three segments, will feature Jeannette Jara, of the leftist, progressive, and social-democratic party alliance plus the Christian Democrats; Jose Antonio Kast, of the far-right Partido Republicano (Republican Party); and Evelyn Matthei, of the traditional right-wing Chile Vamos (Let’s Go Chile) opposition coalition.

Also participating will be Franco Parisi, of the conservative Partido de la Gente (People’s Party); Johannes Kaiser, of the Partido Nacional Libertario (National Libertarian Party), close to President Javier Milei’s ideas; and independents Eduardo Artes, Harold Mayne-Nicholls, and Marco Enriquez Ominami.

The most recent polls conducted by Criteria and Cadem polls stated that Jara is expected to lead the first round, followed by Kast and, further behind, Matthei.

However, in the runoff, both Kast and Matthei are expected to prevail against the ruling party’s candidate, according to forecasters.

The first face-to-face meeting took place in a heated atmosphere after Chilevision channel broadcast a report on the use of social media by Kast’s followers to defame the candidates.
