Alfonso witnessed the attack against the so-called Freedom Flotilla on May 1, 2025 while it was on its way to Gaza.
Her testimony, which she shared with Prensa Latina, narrates that in the early hours of that day, the ship Conscience, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was attacked by unidentified drones as it was preparing to transport humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The vessel, which was sailing under the flag of Palau, was in international waters near Malta when it was targeted and the attack put the lives of its crew members, including journalists and activists of multiple nationalities, at risk.
Diana now remembers that the incident occurred at a symbolic moment: exactly one year after Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Israel on May 1, 2024.
In a historic speech at Plaza de Bolivar, Petro denounced the genocide in Gaza and declared: “If Palestine dies, humanity dies”.
