Israel increased bombing of Gaza City ahead of offensive

Ramallah, Sept 14 (Prensa Latina) Gaza City, located in the north of the Strip, continued to come under intense fire from the Israeli army as part of preparations for a military assault, despite a wave of international condemnation.

This Sunday, at least seven Palestinians were killed during a bombing of a residential building in the Al-Hawa neighborhood, south of the city. Four others were killed in a similar incident in the southern city of Rafah, the official news agency Wafa reported.

Meanwhile, the Al Quds newspaper denounced that the daily air raids and the destruction of buildings in Gaza are intended to force the population to flee south. Local sources reported that early this morning the Israeli Armed Forces (IDF) launched a violent airstrike against an area near Al-Shifa Hospital, which caused a fire in the area.

The Army estimates that more than 250,000 Palestinians have fled the city in recent weeks and moved to southern regions, although some 750,000 remain there, many of whom refuse to leave.

The Israeli Government Press Office reported that since mid-August, the IDF has demolished some 1,600 buildings in the city, damaged another 2,000, and destroyed some 13,000 tents. This situation worsens the humanitarian crisis, as a result of the lack of medicines, which has led to an increase in amputations, and the high demand for blood to save the sick and wounded.

On August 8, the Israeli government approved a plan proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to gradually reoccupy the entire Gaza Strip, a campaign that began in that town, the most populated in the territory.
