Ecuador: Indigenous people demand end of decree on diesel

Quito, Sep 16 (Prensa Latina) The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) and its political arm, Pachakutik, demanded that the government repeal the decree that eliminated the diesel subsidy.

“Right now, the country and its citizens are experiencing a situation of economic crisis, political crisis, and social crisis, and the increase in fuel prices is truly affecting the people,” said Guillermo Churuchumbi, president of Pachakutik.

In this context, he called on “all social and grassroots organizations and impoverished sectors of the country” to join “a great day of unity” in the territories and at the national level.

The head of CONAIE, Marlon Vargas, also spoke out, demanding the immediate repeal of Decree 126, which eliminated the diesel subsidy, and accused President Daniel Noboa of failing to fulfill his campaign promises.

Vargas also announced the convening of an extraordinary CONAIE assembly for this Thursday, with delegates from the coast, the mountains, and the Amazon. The assembly will decide on the measures to be adopted in response to what they consider “an infringement of the rights of the Ecuadorian people.”

Both leaders agreed that the diesel subsidy policy has been upheld by previous governments as a mechanism to support the poorest sectors of the population.

At the same time, CONAIE reiterated its support for local communities protesting against mining in the southern region of the country.
