Northern Japan on alert due to heavy rains

Tokyo, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) Several towns on the island of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, woke up today under a heavy rain warning with the formation of dense storm clouds.

Meteorological authorities warned of the risk of landslides, flash floods, flooding in low-lying areas, and strong winds that could affect the region.

The alert is focused particularly on the Kushiro and Tokachi regions, as according to radar analysis, between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, rainfall of up to 80 millimeters was recorded in the city of Onbetsu, in Kushiro.

Meanwhile, in the city of Atsuma, the amount of accumulated water reached 165.5 millimeters in a six-hour period until 1:00 a.m., well above the historical monthly average for September.

This marks a record rainfall for the town and raises concerns about possible emergencies.

The increasing intensity of the rainfall is related to low-pressure systems moving in from the Sea of Japan, causing extraordinary accumulations in a few hours.

Local authorities have activated emergency protocols to protect the population and recommend staying informed through official channels and avoiding unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas.
