Ecuador between the national strike and the Constituent Assembly

Quito, Sept 22 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador begins a week of political and social tensions amid a national strike in rejection of measures taken by President Daniel Noboa and in the face of institutional controversy sparked by the call for a Constituent Assembly.

The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie) called for the strike after the executive’s decision to put an end to diesel subsidy, although they are also driving with other demands “for life, dignity, and rights.”

Protests are expected to begin early this morning in the mountain provinces, defying the state of emergency and curfew decreed by Noboa in response to the announcement of the demonstrations.

Since Sunday afternoon, military personnel and armored vehicles have been deployed in the city of Latacunga, in the Andean province of Cotopaxi, where the president has set up the temporary seat of government.

In turn, the ruling party called on its supporters to hold a demonstration on Monday in support of the executive in Latacunga.

Although the Ministry of Education expressed that classes would continue to be held in person, some universities pointed out that academic activities would be conducted virtually starting Monday.
