Argentine President reschedules trip to US

Buenos Aires, Sep 22 (Prensa Latina) Amid strong pressure on his government and polls markedly against him, Argentine President Javier Milei rescheduled his trip for Monday to the United States, where he hopes to secure a long-awaited loan from the Treasury.

The Casa Rosada (Presidential Palace) informed that Milei would travel on Sunday evening, although it announced that the president rescheduled his flight at the last minute for Monday evening without providing details of the postponement, which involves rescheduling his meeting this Monday with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director Kristalina Georgieva.

Milei will arrive in New York on Tuesday to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to listen to US President Donald Trump, with whom he hopes to meet that day, while awaiting the US Treasury’s approval of a loan he hopes to receive for 30 billion dollars.

Due to the economic policy implemented by the libertarian government, dollars are disappearing from the Central Bank. He urgently needs this fund to pay off its growing debt and accumulate reserves, as the IMF requires. However, this will further indebted Argentina, further tying it to Washington.

However, Argentine media estimate that this financial lifeline will not exceed 10 billion dollars if Trump ultimately approves the measure, the Treasury prepares the package, and Congress authorizes it.

The search for this financial aid comes after a week of high exchange rate tensions in which the Central Bank had to disburse 1.1 billion dollars to try to sustain the exchange rate and prevent a devaluation of the peso, with all the negative effects it would entail.
