Uruguayan builders on strike due to accidents

Montevideo, Sept 24 (Prensa Latina) The National Union of Construction and Related Workers of Uruguay (Sunca) called for a 24-hour national general strike across the entire industry today, in response to the high and lethal rate of workplace accidents.

It will be a protest “in defense of life,” said the union, which has previously held partial strikes for the same reason.

In an official statement, Sunca explained that the call complies with the resolution taken during the meeting of its Executive Committee on September 10.

At that meeting, they analyzed what they defined as a growing occupational safety emergency in Uruguay and the increase in accidents in the workplace.

Along with the work stoppage in all departments, the union organized events and roundtable discussions with the participation of departmental authorities, legislators, academics, and experts in the field of labor.

In Montevideo, there will be a rally in Plaza Primero de Mayo, where a tent will house four working groups on topics related to occupational safety and health.

Toll workers affiliated with Sunca are also joining the 24-hour strike.
