French PM holds talks with social actors under pressure

Paris, Sep 24 (Prensa Latina) French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu met with unions and employers under pressure from new drives, in a context marked by his efforts to draft the 2026 state budget.

At his Matignon headquarters, Lecornu, appointed on September 9 after the overthrow of Francois Bayrou, will seek to convince the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), a movement that brings together the country’s leading organizations, to demand that the new budget not be projected through austerity and on the workers’ backs.

Led by the French Democratic Confederation of Labor (CFDT) and the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), the two unions took to the streets on September 18, according to their estimates, around one million people, to protest against economic policies.

With Bayrou’s fall on September 8, when the National Assembly denied him the vote of confidence, his 2026 budget plan, which included 44 billion euros in savings and cuts and the unpopular proposal to eliminate two public holidays, failed.

The prime minister announced that he will not seek the elimination of two public holidays, with which Bayrou intended to save approximately 4 billion euros.
