Uruguay to support Argentina against US court ruling

Montevideo, Sept 24 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay will support Argentina before a United States court regarding the ruling that last June ordered the transfer of 51% of the shares of Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales (YPF), it was reported.

The Uruguayan government will act as an amicus curiae in the appeal against the ruling, now suspended by the United States Court of Appeals.

President Javier Milei’s administration sought support from other countries to process the effective appeal of the conviction for the alleged improper expropriation of YPF in 2012.

President Yamandu Orsi’s government will intervene as a “friend of the Court,” a role it has assumed in other cases, according to the Ambito website.

For the Uruguayan authorities, it is “important to continue supporting the Argentine Republic in the next procedural stages against a decision that sets a negative precedent for the interests of states in future litigation before the United States courts,” the resolution released here, signed by Orsi and the Minister of Economy, Gabriel Oddone, states.

As an “amicus curiae,” Uruguay will submit a written submission to voluntarily offer its opinion opposing the ruling ordering the surrender of 51% of the shares of Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales.

This task will be carried out by the Undersecretary of the Presidency, Jorge Diaz, who is charged with “coordinating” with Buenos Aires “to prepare and sign the amicus curiae brief.”
