Ecuador: Collective documents rights abuses during protests

Quito, Sep 25 (Prensa Latina) The Alliance of Human Rights Organizations of Ecuador documented 52 reports of rights violations in the first two days of the national strike, which continues on Thursday against measures adopted by the government of President Daniel Noboa.

The Alliance informed that the incidents that occurred during the protests promoted by the indigenous movement left 41 people injured and at least 50 arrests, all attributed to the police’s actions.

The report states that the most violated rights are the right to protest, personal integrity, freedom of speech, and personal integrity.

The Alliance noted that the Armed Forces and the National Police are responsible for 75 percent of these violations, and beatings and excessive use of force are reported, situations that, according to the collective, have become usual and not the exception.

They also identified cases in which people had visible wounds and injuries on their bodies, without the doctors examining them having prescribed even minimal rest measures, and much less, activated protocols intended to prevent mistreatment or acts of torture.

A group of Ecuadorians gathered outside the Prosecutor’s Office’s Flagrancy Unit, in north-central Quito, on Wednesday to reject the young people detained during the protests and denounce the excessive use of force.
