Russian State Duma chairman’s visit to Vietnam raises expectations

Hanoi, Sep 28 (Prensa Latina) Russian State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin's two-day official visit to Vietnam raises expectations about the presumed strengthening of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

Volodin’s third to Vietnam after he took office represents a significant step in deepening inter-parliamentary cooperation, which is a key element of this Partnership, State Duma First Deputy Chairman Ivan Melnikov said.

Volodin will co-chair the 4th session of the Vietnam-Russia Inter-parliamentary Cooperation Commission, where, according to Melnikov, legislative measures supporting bilateral collaboration in areas such as trade, economy, science and technology, humanitarian affairs, and, especially, the energy sector, will be discussed.

The potential for cooperation is large, and parliamentary diplomacy is a key tool to leverage it effectively, the first deputy chairman of the Russian State Duma emphasized in a statement to VNA.

Melnikov underscored that the role of the legislature is to support high-level decisions and oversee the implementation of intergovernmental agreements, and asserted that Russia is committed to promoting practical cooperation that brings concrete benefits to both peoples.

Regarding the meeting of the Inter-parliamentary Cooperation Commission, he noted that it will allow both sides to work toward strengthening coordination in international parliamentary forums, thereby contributing to building a more just, multilateral, and secure world order.

The Vietnamese National Assembly (Parliament) signed cooperation agreements with the Russian State Duma in 2009 and 2013, and the Federation Council in 2012.
