Angolans remember Raul Diaz-Arguelles with admiration

Luanda, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) Almost half a century after the death of Cuban commander Raul Diaz-Arguelles, the combatant's figure remains in the memory of Angolans, wrapped in a blanket of admiration.

This remark was made by Natasha Diaz-Arguelles, the daughter of the man who was the first chief of the Cuban military mission in Angola, when she received, on his behalf, the commemorative medal for the 50th anniversary of national independence, in the Peace and Development Class.

Speaking to Prensa Latina, she expressed her gratitude for receiving the award from Angolan President Joao Lourenco in a solemn ceremony held on Tuesday, and added that her father would be deeply honored by this decoration.

She stated, “It is important and comforting for me to see that, despite half a century having passed since his death, the same half-century since Angola’s independence, these people remember him and feel admiration and respect for him.”

Natasha Diaz-Arguelles said it is always a great emotion to return to this land where her father fought and died, especially as the 50th anniversary of the fateful day on which a mine claimed his life at just 39 years old, on December 11, 1975.

This Wednesday, the daughter of the Cuban soldier will visit the hospital that bears his name in the Cuanza Sur province, the inauguration of which she attended on October 21, 2024.
