Russia was the main supplier of nuclear fuel to the USA in 2024

Moscow, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) Russia remained as the main supplier of fuel for the United States' nuclear reactors in 2024 despite the import ban, the Sputnik news agency reported.

The note, which was based on an annual report released by the US Department of Energy in September, states that Russia accounted for 20 percent of the enriched uranium fueling US commercial reactors in 2024.

Despite the 27 percent decrease from 2023, deliveries continued even under a ban on imports of Russian reactor fuel that went into effect in August 2024.

In May 2024, then-US President Joe Biden signed legislation banning imports of Russian uranium through 2040.

The legislation prohibits US imports of non-irradiated low-enriched uranium produced in Russia or by a Russian entity and includes measures to close loopholes.

The regulation also provides exemptions if the United States determines that there is no viable alternative source of low-enriched uranium to ensure the continued operation of a nuclear reactor or nuclear power company in the country, or if it believes that importing uranium is in the national interest.

Any exemption granted by the U.S. Department of Energy must end by January 1, 2028, while the ban itself expires on December 31, 2040.
