Chile: Audio recording reveals new evidence in Mapuche leader’s case

Santiago, Chile, Oct 4 (Prensa Latina) Almost a year after the disappearance of Mapuche leader Julia Chuñil, the case took a turn this week after an audio recording, claiming the Chilean environmentalist was burned to death, was leaked.

The 73-year-old woman, who was the president of the Mapuche community of Putreguel, was last seen on November 8, 2024, when she left home with her dog to feed the animals.

After a long process, in which attempts were even made to incriminate some of her relatives, lawyer Karina Riquelme told reporters on Monday the existence of a phone call in which businessman Juan Carlos Morstadt told her father that Chuñil had been burned.

The new evidence led authorities and political and social organizations to demand a thorough investigation into the case.

Referring to the issue, Chilean President Gabriel Boric urged that institutions function and the entire truth be clarified.

Boric said, “No one can be indifferent when a person disappears. We are all concerned about knowing what happened, where she is. There can be no room for impunity in Chile.”

The Communist Party of Chile (PCCh) expressed, in a statement released here, its dismay and condemnation of the new evidence about the disappearance of the environmental leader.
