Peru: Transportation sector confirms protest strike

Lima, Oct 6 (Prensa Latina) A new transport workers' strike, surprisingly called by a sector of the Peruvian capital and the neighboring port of Callao, will be held with a reserved prognosis as it does not cover the entire union.

The protest was called out of indignation by the group represented by the manager of Transporte Terrestre Internacional, Sandro Ojeda, as a reaction to the murder of a bus driver, shot dead while providing the service, vital for a city as large as Lima.

Today’s protest was announced a few days after the, for many, majority stoppage carried out last Thursday by the Coordinadora de las Empresas de Transporte de Lima y Callao (CTU), which this time did not join the new call, although both parties affirmed that there are no conflicts between them.

Ojeda specified that the strike will not include marches, will be peaceful, will not have any political interests and will only consist of turning off the engines of the vehicles.

He did not specify if the buses will be used as in last Thursday’s strike, to travel slowly through the city in several caravans by drivers who simply left the buses abandoned, in the middle of the street, without a key to move them, for several hours.
