Former European commissioner warns of EC weakness

Brussels, Oct 6 (Prensa Latina) Former Commissioner Thierry Breton stated that the European Commission (EC) is undergoing a phase of increasing weakness, the newspaper L'Avenir reported.

Breton linked this situation to a leadership deficit and limited political support.

According to Breton, the body is seriously weakened and emphasized that this is the first time in a long time that it has faced such a high number of votes of no confidence.

The former official ruled out “simple bad luck” and expressed concern about this growing weakness of the institution.

He considered that the problem stems, among other factors, from a lack of leadership and asserted that Europe is experiencing a difficult and existential moment.

He noted that external forces, such as the United States, maintain a hostile attitude toward the European project and expressed particular concern about the lack of full support for the Commission from his own party, the European People’s Party.

The European Parliament will debate and vote on two motions of no confidence against EC President Ursula von der Leyen in a plenary session from October 6 to 9.

The simultaneous submission of two votes of no confidence is unprecedented, according to the source.
