Syria: Low female representation after legislative elections

Damascus, Oct 6 (Prensa Latina) The head of the Supreme Electoral Committee of the Syrian People's Assembly, Muhammad Al-Ahmad, reported that female representation in the recent legislative elections did not exceed three percent, according to preliminary results after the vote count.

In an interview with Syria TV, al-Ahmad explained that the elections were held in 50 of the country’s 62 electoral districts, with the elections in the northeast region and the Sweida governorate, which comprises 12 districts, being postponed.

The official explained that the Supreme Electoral Committee issued preliminary results for 49 districts, with the publication of the vote count for the Semaan district in the Aleppo governorate still pending, scheduled for the coming hours.

Referring to the low female participation rate, Al-Ahmad lamented that only three percent of female candidates were elected and stressed that efforts will be made to correct this deficiency.

President Ahmad Al-Shara will work to address this situation by appointing one-third of the members, as stipulated in the Constitutional Declaration, he stated.

The head of the Committee also emphasized that the electoral process proceeded smoothly and without major obstacles.

The Supreme Committee for Elections issued Resolution No. 66, which includes the preliminary results in the districts where voting took place.

In total, 1,578 candidates participated in these elections, representing 50 electoral districts across the country. Of these, 14 percent were women.
