In a letter signed by DLF Secretary General Vasudeva Nanayakkara, the political organization firmly and unequivocally condemned the more than six-decade-long US blockade of the Caribbean island, which it described as unjust and illegal.
The DLF stated that this unilateral coercive measure is one of the most prolonged and inhumane acts of collective punishment in modern history, violating the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter, international law, and the nations’ sovereignty.
The organization reiterated its support for the overwhelming majority of the world’s nations in reaffirming their solidarity with the Cuban people and government, as the annual vote in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the resolution presented by Havana demanding an end to the embargo approaches.
It pointed out that Cuba, despite the enormous challenges posed by the US blockade, has continued to demonstrate remarkable resilience and internationalism, offering medical assistance, education, and humanitarian support to countries in need in the Global South.
The DLF noted that the US blockade has caused untold economic hardship and suffering to generations of Cubans, limiting access to food, medicine, technology, and essential goods.
