A statement released on Monday noted that Youssouf also congratulated the people of that country for “their peaceful and orderly participation in this credible democratic process,” and pointed out that this act underscores that nation’s commitment to the rule of law and democratic principles.
The AUC chairperson reaffirmed that the African Union will support Seychelles and is ready to collaborate with the new administration. He also ratified that the organization will continue its efforts to implement the 2063 Agenda, which is based on the promotion of constitutional democracy, good governance, and political stability.
He also praised, in the release, the attitude of other candidates, including the outgoing president, who participated in the elections, “for their respect for the electoral process and maintaining the spirit of peaceful political competition.”
Youssouf also expressed gratitude to the Joint Election Observation Mission of the continental organization and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, headed by former Lesotho Prime Minister Pakalitha Bethuel Mosisili, and other international observers for their contribution to the transparency and credibility of the process.
Patrick Herminie, of the United Seychelles party, won the presidency in a runoff with 52.7 percent of the vote, according to official data released by the Electoral Commission on Sunday.
