Lula confirms Pope will not attend COP30,but promises to visit Brazil

Brasilia, Oct 13 (Prensa Latina) President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva confirmed that Pope Leo XIV will not attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in November, but assured that he plans to visit Brazil soon.

After a private audience at the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, Lula explained on the social media platform X that he had extended an invitation to the Supreme Pontiff to participate in the climate summit, to be held in Belem, capital of the northern state of Para, “for its symbolic value in the heart of the Amazon,” but the leader of the Catholic Church declined due to Jubilee commitments.

“His Holiness told us that he will not be able to attend COP30, but he will send a delegation from the Vatican and intends to come to Brazil at the appropriate time,” the president strummed, underscoring the joy that this possibility generates in the country.

The former labor leader emphasized that the Holy Father will be received “with the affection, hospitality, and faith of the Brazilian people,” and took advantage of the meeting to congratulate him on his apostolic exhortation Dilexi Te, focused on poverty and social justice.
