Election processes in Colombia will include technological advances

Bogota, Oct 13 (Prensa Latina) The upcoming elections in Colombia will feature a technological transformation plan that incorporates important advances, stated the national registrar, Hernan Penagos.

The official stated in an interview with Caracol Radio that the entity is working on incorporating new digital tools such as voter identification applications, facial biometrics, automated data transmission, and real-time election monitoring platforms.

Penagos revealed that the automation of data transmission and forms will reduce the time between the closing of the polls and the dissemination of results. In this regard, he stated: “We will have audits of the electoral processes, international observation, digitization of tally sheets, facial and fingerprint biometrics.”

The agency also emphasized that all systems will be protected by cybersecurity protocols, backup copies, and independent audits to ensure the integrity of the process.

Recently, the National Civil Registry reported that it held training sessions for consular officials from five continents, as well as those from the Foreign Ministry, in preparation for the 2026 Congressional and Presidential elections.

A total of 108 employees were trained on topics such as the registration process for Colombians residing abroad, valid identification documents for this process, purging and updating the electoral roll, polling stations by country, and voting juries, among others, the agency noted.

The Congressional elections will be held on March 8, 2026, and the first round of the Presidential elections will be held on May 31.
