Colombian Senate to resume debate on 2026 Budget

Bogota, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) The debate on the 2026 National Budget will continue today for the second consecutive day in the Colombian Senate, where it faces opposition from the most conservative sectors.

Members of the opposition parties left the chamber the day before, breaking the quorum, leading to the suspension of the discussion on the proposal.

The Plenary Session of the House of Representatives, however, approved the bill, which amounts to almost 547 trillion pesos (around $140 billion at the current exchange rate).

This bill must be offset by a financing law through which the government hopes to raise approximately 16 trillion pesos (about $4 billion), the discussion of which will be separate.

The proposal, which was approved by the representatives, established changes and adjustments in the funding allocated to the ministries.

In addition to adding 150 billion pesos (approximately $38,845,000) to the Ministry of Commerce, 200 billion pesos were added to the Information and Communications Technology portfolio, and an identical amount to the Ministry of Sports (approximately $51 million).

Approximately 600 billion pesos (approximately $154 million) were added to the Attorney General’s Office.

Next year’s budget includes 358 trillion pesos for operations (approximately $91,795,000,000), 100 trillion pesos (approximately $25,640,000,000) for debt repayment, and just over 88 trillion pesos (approximately $22,600,000,000) for investment.
