The illegal burial proceedings are being carried out at the former popular Carlos Cortes beach resort, located in the commune of Santo Domingo, in the Valparaiso region.
“This place was used as a detention and torture center between 1973 and 1977,” Cifuentes reported, adding that the facility was under the command of Major Mario Jara, of the Tejas Verdes School of Military Engineers.
Jara was a member of the National Intelligence Directorate, also known by its acronym DINA, the secret police force of the Augusto Pinochet regime.
The site initially served as a training camp for officers who would join the DINA, who were later deployed to various repressive centers such as Londres 38, Ollagüe, and Villa Grimaldi.
Excavations at Carlos Cortes will continue until Friday and involve professionals from the Criminalistics Laboratory and the Human Rights Crimes Investigation Brigade of the Investigative Police.
