Al-Sharaa reiterates demand for Israeli-occupied Golan Heights

Damascus, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) Syria's interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa reaffirmed on Thursday that the Golan Heights is a Syrian territory occupied by Israel since 1967, and its recovery represents a legitimate right.

Damascus will continue to demand the return of the Golan Heights through peaceful negotiations, and in accordance with international law and United Nations resolutions, the interim president stated in an interview with CBS News, which was broadcast by Syrian media here.

Al-Sharaa asserted that Syria did not make any provocation against its neighbors and will not allow the territory to be used as a platform to threaten any country, including Israel.

He revealed that Israel has launched more than 1,000 airstrikes and 400 ground incursions, including shelling against military facilities, civilian targets, and even the presidential palace, since the overthrow of the government of former President Bashar al-Assad on December 8, 2024.

Al-Sharaa warned that these actions are a declaration of war and stated that Tel Aviv’s persistent violation of international law could lead to an escalation of tensions that would plunge the entire region into chaos.

The head of State reiterated his country’s commitment to the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement and expressed Syria’s willingness to welcome back the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

Al-Sharaa noted that Israel has rejected the return of such a mission.
