Panama City, Oct 20 (Prensa Latina) Former Panamanian Ambassador to Cuba, Rafael Moreno Saavedra, stated that the leader of the triumphant Revolution in 1959, Fidel Castro (1926-2016), is the most extraordinary man he has ever known, and his people the most dignified.

Interviewed in his residence in the city of Macaracas, in Los Santos province, for the podcast program “Cuba y Panama, Una Gran Conexion,” hosted by Cuban Ambassador to this nation, Victor Cairo, the former diplomat praised Fidel’s depth of thought and his concern for social justice, qualities with which he identifies.

Concerning Fidel’s 100th birthday next year, Moreno Saavedra praised, among other qualities, his humility, his oratory, his profound knowledge, his high culture, and his vision for the future of the region.

The pleasant conversation took place in his modest residence, located almost 300 kilometers from the capital, where the host recounted experiences from his mission leading the diplomatic team.

Appointed by then-President Ernesto Perez Balladares (1994-1999), Moreno Saavedra began his duties as Panama’s representative in Cuba in 1994 and remained in Havana until 1996.

Regarding the Caribbean nation and the current hardships it suffers due to the United States blockade, Moreno Saavedra insisted that a declining and desperate empire is now attacking the island with greater force. Still, its hostile measures are in vain, he commented.

Cuba has shown over more than six decades that nothing and no-one can yield it, because its example of resistance to the cruel siege, which, as we see, currently impacts several spheres, but especially the generation and distribution of electricity, he added.

The former ambassador reaffirmed that he is grateful to the Cuban Revolution for the training given to his son, Lenin Fidel, who is a graduate from the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) in Havana and is now a urology specialist.
