Both leaders will be in Malaysia for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Kuala Lumpur, scheduled for October 26 and 27.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that a brief, symbolic meeting is possible to show the positive relationship between Brazil and the United States.
Regarding the negotiations on the unilateral tax increase on Brazilian products, progress is expected in the working group between both countries.
Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira spoke on October 16 in Washington with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Shortly after the meeting, in a statement to the press, Vieira said that the talk was “very productive,” without detailing the content of the conversation.
He confirmed that Brazil expressed the “need to reverse the measures initiated in July,” specifically the 50 percent tariffs imposed on domestic goods and the sanctions against Brazilian officials.
The parties’ teams have now established a negotiation schedule and are expected to hold a virtual technical meeting in the coming days.
