China’s FM defends key role of Global South in global reform

Beijing, Oct 27 (Prensa Latina) China underscored that the Global South has become a key force in the reform of the global governance system and reiterated the need to give these nations a greater voice. During his speech at the Lanting Forum on Global Governance for a Community with a Shared Future, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi noted that the collective rise of these countries represents a historic transformation that demands greater representation and influence in international decisions.

Wang underscored, “Developing countries have the right and the ability to participate in global governance reform as protagonists, not as observers.”

The foreign minister pointed out that reform of the international system must reflect changes in the global economy and respond to the demands of countries of the South for equity and justice.

The diplomat advocated for increasing the voice of Africa and other developing regions in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and proposed adjustments to the International Monetary Fund’s quotas and the World Bank’s actions to correct the existing democratic deficit in economic governance.

Wang expressed support for a more active role for financial institutions such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), which, he said, “constructively complement” the global financial system.
