Cubans recall Camilo Cienfuegos 66 years after his death

Havana, Oct 28 (Prensa Latina) Cubans commemorate the 66th anniversary of the death of Commander Camilo Cienfuegos, known on the island as the Heroe de Yaguajay (Hero of Yaguajay).

Also known as the “Senor de la Vanguardia”, he lost his life on October 28, 1959, when the plane he was traveling in fell into the sea.

Of a cheerful and jovial nature, Camilo Cienfuegos was a man of immense patriotism, hence his willingness to enlist in the Granma yacht expedition that departed from Tuxpan, Mexico, on November 25, 1956, with 82 combatants.

At the beginning of the War of Liberation, Camilo Cienfuegos, who was born on February 6, 1932, in Havana, began to stand out for his skills as one of the most distinguished soldiers of the Rebel Army, where he rose to the rank of commander.

Between August and October 1958, he led an invasion column from the Sierra Maestra mountain range to central Cuba, where he successfully led several military operations.

Following the triumph of the Revolution on January 1, 1959, and until his unfortunate death on October 28 of that year, Camilo Cienfuegos was one of the most prestigious leaders of the Caribbean nation.
