France registers 11% increase in femicides

Paris, Oct 31 (Prensa Latina) France registered 107 femicides last year, an 11% increase compared to 2023, according to a report released by the Ministry of the Interior.

According to the ministry, of the 138 people murdered by their partner or ex-partner during 2024, 107 were women and 31 were men.

This figure represents one violent death in this context every three days, a situation that is causing concern within society, particularly among women’s rights organizations, as women are the most affected by this phenomenon.

Regarding the details of the femicides, the Ministry of the Interior report points out that 90% of them occurred in a home, with 49 involving a knife and 34 involving a firearm.

The source also addresses the causes behind the crimes, such as arguments (31%) and unwelcome separations (16%).

One disturbing statistic is that almost half of the women murdered last year in France by their partner or ex-partner had already reported acts of violence to law enforcement.

Human rights organizations are calling for more decisive action and protection from the authorities for women who report abuse.

The government maintains that preventing and combating this type of crime is among its priorities.
