India remembers Indira Gandhi 41st anniversary of her death

New Delhi, Oct 31 (Prensa Latina) India is paying tribute to Indira Gandhi, the only woman to have held the office of head of government in the South Asian country, on the 41st anniversary of her assassination.

At Shakti Stahl in New Delhi, a sacred site in her memory, the leadership of the opposition Indian National Congress party paid tribute to Gandhi, a leader whose life embodied courage, conviction, and an unwavering spirit of service.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, CPP Chairwoman Sonia Gandhi, and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi offered floral tributes and solemn gestures to the former head of government.

Born on November 19, 1917, Indira Gandhi was the first and only woman to serve as Prime Minister of India.

She assumed office in 1966 after the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri, in whose government she had served as Minister of Information and Broadcasting.

Indira was Prime Minister from January 1966 to March 1977 in her first term, and again from January 1980 until her assassination in October 1984 by one of her bodyguards.

She was a close friend of Cuba and of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, who considered her like a sister.

The relationship between these two figures became a symbol of the ties between India and the Caribbean nation.
