Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior and Security, Jaquemain Shabani, accused these parties of violating the principles of national unity, the preservation of the sovereignty of the Congolese state, and the maintenance of security and territorial integrity, according to a statement.
Among the suspended organizations are Kabila’s People’s Party for Reconstruction and Democracy; the Congolese Workers’ Alliance; and Piste pour l’Emergence, led by Seth Kikuni.
The government’s decision has been condemned by some civil society actors and human rights defenders, who consider the action a serious attack on democracy and the values that underpin the rule of law, Radio Okapi reported.
The emerging Congolese civil society is among those who rejected the measure, arguing that while the government’s duty is to preserve public order, national security, and institutional stability, it is essential to respect constitutional principles, political pluralism, freedom of expression, and freedom of association, the report noted.
