A ship carrying 246 tons of aid to Cuba will depart from Colombia

Bogota, November 3 (Prensa Latina) The Colombian Navy ship ARC Victoria will set sail from the northern port of Cartagena with 246 tons of food, hygiene products, mosquito nets, milk, water, and fuel to be delivered to Cuba, a country recently battered by Hurricane Melissa.

This was announced by the Director General of the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) of Colombia, Carlos Carrillo.

According to the official, of the 246 tons to be loaded onto the vessel, which are expected to arrive in Cuba, 54 tons are dry cargo, and 31,000 gallons of fuel, in addition to drinking water, will also be sent.

“Not only is the UNGRD participating with emergency humanitarian assistance here, but also the mining and energy sector and the agricultural sector,” the director added.

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Cuba last Wednesday as a Category 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale, striking the eastern part of the island and causing severe flooding.

In addition to extensive damage to homes, the storm affected power lines, roads, and crops in the eastern provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Granma, Guantanamo, Holguin, and Las Tunas.

To date, Cuba has not reported any fatalities from the storm.
