“Today, Russia-Panama relations continue to develop consistently based on equal and mutually beneficial cooperation,” the diplomatic institution said in a statement on Panama’s Independence Day.
The Foreign Ministry noted that one of the most significant events in the history of bilateral relations was the passage of a Soviet submarine detachment through the Panama Canal in November-December 1942.
Moscow recalled, “Its objective was to assist in the protection of the Allied Arctic convoys, which supplied military equipment and goods to the USSR across the North Atlantic under the Lend-Lease program.”
During their stay in the Canal, the Soviet sailors were warmly and cordially received by the Panamanians, who helped them carry out the necessary repairs at the Coco-Solo port in preparation for their important mission.
